Icelander Ragnar Axelsson (born 1958), one of the North’s most in-demand photographers, has long been observing climate change with the greatest concern. For more than 40 years, he has been documenting the dramatic changes to landscapes and habitats on the margins of the inhabitable world, travelling to the most remote and isolated regions of the Arctic, to Inuit hunters in Northern Canada and Greenland, to farmers and fishermen on Iceland and the Faroe Islands, and to the Indigenous population in Northern Scandinavia and Siberia.

This exhibition offers a first personal look at Axelsson’s life’s work, which self-evidently cannot be complete yet. For, behind his photographs there lies the firm conviction that the traditional culture of the Arctic population is not only in the process of vanishing, but it is unable to withstand the destructive effects of such major forces as the economy and climate change.

Der isländische Fotograf Ragnar Axelsson (geb. 1958), einer der gefragtesten Fotografen des Nordens, beobachtet den Klimawandel schon seit Langem mit größter Sorge. Seit mehr als 40 Jahren dokumentiert er die dramatischen Veränderungen von Landschaften und Lebensräumen am Rand der bewohnbaren Welt und reist in die abgelegensten und isoliertesten Regionen der Arktis, zu Inuit-Jägern nach Nordkanada und Grönland, zu Bauern und Fischern auf Island und den Färöerinseln und zur indigenen Bevölkerung in Nordskandinavien und Sibirien.

Diese erste Retrospektive Axelssons macht in beeindruckenden Schwarz-Weiß-Bildern die außergewöhnlichen Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, Tieren und Orten in der Arktis und ihrer extremen Umwelt sichtbar – Beziehungen, die aufgrund des beispiellosen Klimawandels kontinuierlichen tiefgreifenden und komplexen Veränderungen unterliegen.
